DESIGN THINKING PRINCIPLES APPLIED IN PRODUCT DESIGNING:
EMPATHIZE
As a product designer, empathy should be one of your topmost traits. This is one of the first skills to exercise in product design. Extensive market research calls for an understanding of the problems of the audience. Frequent consultations with experts will help in observing, communicating, and engagement. This is to find the gaps in the market.
“Nunc sed mattis diam. Suspendisse mi libero, sagittis nec varius quis, pulvinar eu nisl. Nulla in accumsan orci, a varius velit. Maecenas tincidunt mauris rutrum, eleifend sem at, sollicitudin ante.”
This approach needs to be human-centered. After doing research and recognizing the pain points, you have to list the most common ones. In order to understand the challenges faced and utilize them for the next stage.
For example, PepsiCo CEO Ms. Indra Nooyi incorporated design thinking in their strategy. Product design happened by contemplating about consumer experiences. She leads the idea of the touch screen Fountain machine. Also, the launch of a special line of Women’s snacks with reduced crunch and less orange finger dust. This recreated the way consumers interacted with the products. Her empathetic thought process implemented increased PepsiCo sales.
DEFINE
In this stage, you accumulate the data you have collected and then move on to identification. Then you have to define the problem. This step calls for a thorough analysis of the observations and unification of them. These will lead you to introduce potential elements to the product design. This will solve the problem.
Ritesh Agarwal from Oyo Rooms thought alone these lines. He defined the problem by doing extensive research and listed budget accommodations. Then he found out that there was a scarcity of budget hotel rooms in India. This was the gap/pain point that he highlighted in the Indian Hospitality Industry. Hence he started partnering with small hotels and started Oyo hotel rooms. This gave the Indian middle-class quick access to affordable hotel rooms across India.
IDEATE
This is the most creative stage of the design thinking process. Here you need to expand the problem space and think outside the box. Get as many concepts and ideas and list them down. Also, list down the elements which will accelerate the solutions.
.To provide convenience and time management to the train commuters of Mumbai Sanjay Teke developed the idea of a map. This showed the upcoming trains arriving in respective destinations at the right time. This map was available in an M Indicator app which made the lives of the daily commuters easy and efficient. This also helped them avoid the peak hour rush.
PROTOTYPE
Once the idea implementation is over, the designers will present a Prototype of the product. Prototyping is creating a mock or a draft design of the product. Then sent to your clients for reviewing. The clients analyze the overall product and suggest desired changes. The design revision happens again and again along with rectifications within the sample. After continuous re-examinations the designers will have a clearer idea and will be well equipped with the design.
TEST
The final stage is the most crucial stage of the entire process. Often even in this stage product alterations and changes are implemented. This obliterates any kind of minor glitch. There were many products that suffered because they did not go through the final testing stage. One such example is the Reckitt and Benckiser metal foot file whose sales fell flat. This was because of its humongous weight and poor results. Hence Testing is imperative important in order to save the brand from ill recognition and deliver the best results.
TO SUM IT UP
Webbies advises all Product designers and developers to follow the above stages and protocols. This will help them perfect their quality and product design. Your product’s value is directly proportional to your brand’s value. Hence a systematized product development process is imperative for your business model.
