How To Design Eye Catching Product Labels?
WHAT ARE PRODUCT LABELS?
What are product labels? Product labels represents the value and uses of your product. It is one of the tangible medium of communication between the brand and the consumer. The important information about the product should be strategically printed in the product labels. This conveys a crisp clear data about the product in the product labels.
Example: a cookie box product label will have the ingredients of the cookies as well as the ways it should be stored. They also mention the price and the date of manufacture and expiry.
Webbies has been into product packaging for 12 years. Out of our experience we gathered that the product labels is the most important part of product packaging. It is not a mere strip of paper wrapped around a product with some random text. The design is one of the vital parts of a label and should be strategically crafted and placed. It should also compliment the text and the brand. Correct product packaging label builds brand equity.
WE LIST DOWN A 5 QUICK TIPS TO DESIGN STUNNING PRODUCT LABELS :
MAKE YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE AND COMPETITORS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION:
This calls for an extensive research. Identify your target customers and assess their age, gender, values, education and preferences. This will shape your designing decisions. For example if you are packaging a kid’s board game you have to make sure that the color of your package is bright and poppy along with the use of quirky fonts. Your audience’s bent of mind and personality will provide cues for your designing process.
Extensive research on competitor product labels also help you in designing your own label. The key is to seek ideas which work and list them down. Ideas that don’t work should be deleted. A competitor’s designing success also gives you a clear knowledge about the likes and preferences of your audience.
UNIQUE SELLING POINT OF THE PRODUCT IS KEY:
This process starts right from the initial stages of product development. While you are brainstorming about your new product you need to list down the unique selling points of your product. You need to highlight the uniqueness of your product to stand out. Pushing the positive and unique points of your product is key. After all content is king and a significant part of the designing process.
The following is an example of a packaging design that we attempted for one of our clients. Gifts that grow is a is a unique product which consists of stationary items like pencils erasers, sharpeners notebooks.
These when exhausted after use recycled in the form of plants. The USP of the product lies in it’s eco friendly quality. Hence green color used in its packaging and taglines such as ‘ color pencils that grow” put to highlight the USP. The instructions for use are also included in the packaging label.
COLOR SCHEME SHOULD COMPLEMENT YOUR PRODUCT NATURE:
You should strike a balance between your package and the nature of your product. We showcase to you one of the examples from our work. We designed the packaging and label of an Ayurveda essential oil.
Keeping the purity of essential oils in mind our designer reflected its nature through colors. The colors chosen were in pure white tones, the product was highlighted very well. The fonts chosen were simple and mono-line to achieve excellent clarity. The back package design served as a label that communicated the uses of essential oils. Quirky icons are used to make this information eye-catching and engaging. QR codes were also used for scanning the product online.
ADD RELEVANT VISUAL ELEMENTS AND ILUSTRATIONS TO YOUR PRODUCT LABELS:
The pictures which you add to your packaging should be relevant to the product. Most packaging labels have visuals and illustrations of the product concerned or the key ingredients of the product. The real gold sinking fish feed package that we designed contains an illustration of goldfish sinking in the waves.
This demonstrates the idea of sinking fish feed. It craftily adds the label information in the front packaging itself so that customers notice. The color tones used are blue and white to demonstrate the aquatic surroundings.
CREATE LIMITED EDITION PRODUCT LABELS TO TEST ITS SUCCESS:
Make your audience a vital part of the label-making process. Arrange a few samples of the packaged products and releasing it to a selective audience. If the package label is one of the reasons why your product sales hit an all-time high, you know it’s working out. Frequent reviews from customers can also help you change your design as per majority demands.
